How to ship a bicycle by courier?

2019-03-17
Bicycle sellers already have experience and know well how to ship a bicycle by courier. For an ordinary user, however, this can be quite a challenge. We therefore offer some tips on how to prepare a bicycle for shipping.

A cardboard box is the best option for shipping a bicycle by courier

Contrary to appearances, a bicycle is a delicate item. It does not matter that it is made of metal and withstands various stresses on the road. In international transport, with multiple transfers, it can easily be damaged, even something as simple as paint scratches. It is also easy to damage certain parts, especially those protruding beyond the frame line and small components such as the bell or lights. For this reason, although the task is sometimes not easy, it is best to pack the bicycle in a cardboard box. This is no problem if you still have the original box the bicycle was delivered in. If you do not have that box, you need to find another one. Where? You can try bicycle shops. The internet also comes to the rescue – special bicycle boxes can be purchased on auction sites. You can also try hardware stores and shops with large household appliances or furniture, but these will be solutions requiring a bit more effort when packing due to the mismatch between package sizes and the actual dimensions of the bicycle.

For courier shipping, pack the bicycle clean and disassembled

Before packing in a box and handing it to the courier, the bicycle should be thoroughly cleaned and then disassembled. To reduce the dimensions, you need to unscrew the pedals and lower the seat post as much as possible or remove it entirely. All small bicycle accessories need to be removed – the speedometer, lights, bell, etc. The handlebars usually just need to be loosened and positioned along the frame. The front wheel may also need to be removed. As much as possible, try to protect the derailleur, for example with a cardboard cover. Also wrap any angular elements that could scratch other parts or cause bending. All disassembled parts should be carefully secured with stretch film or bubble wrap; small items can be placed in smaller boxes. Wrap them with packing tape so they do not fall out of the film.

How to place a bicycle in a box so the courier can transport it safely?

Place all elements in a large box. Now it is time for filler materials. They should be lightweight because the bicycle itself weighs quite a lot, and the shipment should not be heavier than the courier company's rules allow. It is worth remembering that the courier collecting and delivering parcels works alone – so they must be able to independently pick up, load onto the vehicle, and at the delivery location also deliver the parcel. Filler materials, which can also be purchased at hardware stores and online, including auction sites, should ensure that neither the bicycle itself nor its disassembled smaller parts move around in the box. Packed small items can in fact be taped to the frame. Nothing should rattle around or press against anything in the box, even though the parcel may be in different positions during various stages of transport. Considering the weight of the bicycle, you also need to secure the box from the outside as carefully as possible so it does not fall apart during transport. It is better to spend a bit more on proper packing tape and not skimp before shipping. The box should not have any bulges. It is worth checking whether and for how much the shipment is insured. In our company, every parcel is insured for EUR 300. If the bicycle is worth more, you should state its value when placing the order – this will be the basis for any claims in case of loss or damage to the shipment, arising from transport law.
