How to pack bicycles

Transporting a bicycle requires proper disassembly and protection to avoid damage to the frame, wheels and mechanisms during transport.

1Disassembly before packing

  • Remove the pedals (left: unscrew clockwise, right: anticlockwise).
  • Remove the front wheel – loosen the quick-release or unscrew the axle.
  • Turn the handlebars 90 degrees and secure with tape – this will reduce the overall size.
  • Lower the seat to its lowest position.
  • Remove lights, mirrors and other accessories.

2Protecting the frame

  • Wrap the frame in bubble wrap or foam – especially tubes and welds.
  • Protect derailleurs and brakes with cardboard or foam.
  • Wrap the chain in a cloth or film – protects other parts from getting dirty.
  • Protect frame corners with cardboard.

3Packing the wheels

  • Deflate the tyres to approx. 50% – prevents bursting with pressure changes.
  • Wrap each wheel individually in bubble wrap.
  • Place cardboard between the wheel and the frame as a separator.

4External packaging

  • Best to use the original bicycle box or a specialised box.
  • If you don't have a box – wrap the bicycle tightly in stretch film (min. 4 layers).
  • Fill empty spaces in the box with newspapers or foam.
  • Seal the box firmly with packing tape on all flaps.
💡

Bicycle boxes can often be obtained for free from bike shops – just ask.
