How to pack fishing rods
Fishing rods are long, slender and fragile items that require special protection. An improperly packed rod can break, bend or damage other shipments.
1Preparing the rod
- ✓Separate the rod into segments (if it is a multi-piece rod).
- ✓Remove the reel – pack it separately in bubble wrap.
- ✓Remove hooks, lures and accessories – pack in a bag.
- ✓Clean the rod of dirt and moisture.
2Protection
- ✓Wrap each segment in bubble wrap – especially the tips and guides.
- ✓The rod blanks are the most fragile – add an extra layer on the tips.
- ✓Place cardboard dividers between segments.
- ✓Protect the guides (eyes) with foam or cardboard.
3Packaging
- ✓Best option: a transport tube (PVC or cardboard) matched to the length.
- ✓Fill empty spaces inside the tube with newspapers or foam.
- ✓Without a tube: use a long box or make one from two shorter ones (joined with tape).
- ✓Close both ends of the tube/box and seal firmly with tape.
💡
Transport tubes for fishing rods can be bought at fishing shops or online at a low cost.
4Labelling
- ✓Label the shipment: "CAUTION – FISHING ROD", "DO NOT BEND", "LONG SHIPMENT".
- ✓State the dimensions on the label.
⚠️
Fishing rods without protective packaging (tube or box) will not be accepted for transport.
