Upholstered Furniture Packing Instructions
Transporting upholstered furniture (such as sofas, armchairs, ottomans, corner units, etc.) requires proper protection due to its size, weight, and delicate surface. Improper packing can result in scuffs, tears, frame damage, or staining during loading, unloading, or transit.
The following guide will help you prepare your furniture safely and in accordance with our companyβs requirements.
Best Option β Original Manufacturer Packaging
The safest way to transport upholstered furniture is in its original packaging from the manufacturer. This typically includes cardboard corner protectors, foam padding, durable cardboard wrapping, and stretch or bubble wrap. However, some manufacturers may package their furniture insufficiently to save time and materials. Always check whether your furniture is adequately protected β and if not, reinforce it before transport.
How to pack furniture without original packaging
1. Clean the furniture
- Make sure the furniture is clean and dry (moisture can damage upholstery during transport).
2. Protect corners and protruding parts
- Corners and edges are most vulnerable β protect them with foam, cardboard secured with tape, or thick bubble wrap.
3. Apply a cardboard protective layer
- Wrap large sheets of corrugated cardboard or flat cardboard around the furniture.
- Secure with packing tape or stretch film to keep the cardboard in place without damaging the fabric.
4. Wrap with thick stretch film or bubble wrap
- Apply multiple layers of stretch film β it protects against dirt, dust, moisture, and abrasions.
- If using bubble wrap, make sure all surfaces are covered, including the underside.
5. Secure movable parts
- Any removable parts such as cushions, drawers, or legs should be detached and packed separately or firmly fixed to the main unit.
What to avoid?
- Do not hand over furniture without any protection.
- Do not leave any surface uncovered β even the underside can become dirty or damaged.
- Do not rely solely on stretch film without a cardboard layer β it does not protect against impact.
- Do not leave empty spaces in the packaging if using a transport box.
Summary
- βοΈ Ideally, use the original manufacturerβs packaging β but only if itβs solid and protective.
- βοΈ For used or unpackaged furniture β protect corners, apply a layer of cardboard, and wrap with stretch film.
- βοΈ Detach and secure any movable parts separately.
